“Out of clutter find simplicity.” -Albert Einstein
As the summer months start to wind down and schools prepare to open, there is a certain nostalgia that starts to build. There’s something about the summer that makes you just slow down and enjoy the moment. I’m sure it’s the more relaxed schedules, vacations and excuses to meet with friends – but it’s also a time where we appreciate the good life – the simplicities that make every day just a little more enjoyable and fun. The extra daylight stimulates serotonin, our happy hormone.
We tend to give ourselves permission to live away from a schedule and structure and “go with the flow.” It reminds us that time with our loved ones is the real priority, not so much the to-do lists. We make time to do the things we really love and waste time without guilt. We move more, we celebrate more and we indulge more. It gives a sense of freedom and can be very energizing.
I also find the summer months make my mind sharper. When I’m not in the same rush mode, I am able to think and reflect. It inspires me to de-clutter and start the new season fresh and renewed.
As we transition to fall, I encourage you to align your mental and physical activities to the next season. Embrace the change in nature and the reminders than come with it. In the words of Henry David Thoreau, in the last few weeks of summer, I plan to “breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit.”
