What is Reconstructive Breast Surgery?

New Jersey patients that undergo mastectomies may feel concerned that they’ve lost some of their femininity. Fortunately, over the last few years, there have been some incredible developments in the techniques that surgeons can use to rebuild the breast shape. These new techniques allow patients to get beautiful results and also heal faster.

Reconstructive breast surgery uses several different options to replace the breast mound with tissue taken from donor sites on the patient or with breast implants. Patients can also elect to undergo reconstruction during their mastectomy or anytime afterward.

Options for Reconstructive Breast Surgery

New Jersey women have a couple of different options when it comes to how they want to rebuild their breast. Each of these options has their advantages and disadvantages.

  • Autogenous Flap Method – In this option, Dr. Comizio uses the patient’s own tissues to reconstruct a breast mound. This requires Comizio to take tissue from other donor sites, most often from the tummy or the back. Obviously, this method increases the recovery period because there are two surgical sites to heal. Also, the size of the breast mound can vary depending on the amount of tissue that Dr. Comizio can find.
  • Breast implants – The most popular choice for our patients is using breast implants. First, implants allow patients to choose the exact size and shape they want for their breasts. Second, with only one surgical site, the healing process is usually faster and less painful.

New Jersey patients will get to discuss all of their options, questions, and concerns with Dr. Comizio during their consultations.

When to Get Breast Reconstructive Surgery

New Jersey patients will also have to discuss when they want to have their breast reconstruction performed. Some patients elect to get it done during their mastectomy. Dr. Comizio can begin the reconstruction immediately after the mastectomy is complete. One of the advantages of doing it this way is that there will only be one recovery period. But other patients elect to recover from their mastectomy first and then get the reconstruction. Patients can get their breast reconstruction performed anytime after their mastectomy, even years later.
