“Life is like ice cream: Enjoy it before it melts.”
How can we not recognize National Ice Cream Month? We are right in the middle of summer, and nothing ends a hot summer day like good ice cream.
Ice cream is one of my favorite treats. Yes, it can be decadent and indulgent, but the joy of it outweighs the extra calories.
In an abstract way, I started to relate ice cream to life. We spend a lot of our lives trying to do the right thing – to make good decisions, exercise caution, and maintain a good image. We often forget how to let loose, relax and enjoy…to indulge in the little things that make us happy.
I spend much of my life being accountable – in work, with my family, and in social situations. I know I have a reputation to uphold and I am very humbled by the outpouring of support. I also want people to know I am human, and I like to separate from my day-to-day and express myself freely. I appreciate the indulgences, the adventures, and the ability to just be free. I would not be complete if I couldn’t let both sides of me out.
I appreciate the little things that make me smile and allow me to be frivolous. I prefer to not always takes things so seriously – even with a very serious career path. I like to find humor and to identify with people in a very human and real way. We are all the same – we like to feel rewarded with our accomplishments and we also like to let the responsibilities go and be more lighthearted and unguarded.
And that brings me back to ice cream. It’s sweet and delicious – it allows us to be in the moment and not take life so seriously. It reminds us of childhood and being carefree. Ice cream allows us to be a little indulgent. It is an escape, complimented by toppings and a cherry.
I invite you to join me in the indulgent treat this month and together, we can escape into the moment.
