Liposuction – What to Know

Liposuction, also known as suction-assisted lipectomy or lipo, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes fat from specific areas of the body to reshape or contour it. It’s often used to remove fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise, such as fat around the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, or waistline. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and it doesn’t appear to affect obesity-related problems.

When diet and exercise are not giving the results desired, especially in relation to body shape, liposuction might be an option.  The procedure could provide outstanding, life changing results, however it is important to consider it is an invasive surgical procedure that has associated risks – like all procedures. While  liposuction permanently removes fat cells from specific areas of the body, it is typically only permanent if a person’s weight remains the same and does not prevent weight gain. Gaining weight after the procedure may increase the size of other parts of the body, making it appear that fat has been moved and fat cells can grow and expand. A healthy diet and regimen is necessary to maintain results.

Treatment Options for Liposuction

Patients considering liposuction have several important considerations to make before their procedure. Below are some of the most important:

Before the Procedure

Since liposuction isn’t intended for weight loss, but rather to sculpt the body to a new shape, it’s important to try to reach a desired weight first.

After the procedure, it will be much easier to maintain results if a desired body weight is already reached.

Types of Liposuction

Most procedures are performed at an outpatient surgery center or at a hospital. While there are different types of liposuction, the most common type uses a “cannula”, which is a small tube that sucks up any fat pockets.

Prior to the procedure, a consultation will help guide the end result.

Recovering from Liposuction

Liposuction recovery can take up to several weeks. Most patients can return to most of their normal activities after one week. It is expected to experience some pain, swelling, and bruising. Compression garments will be used to control any fluid that could collect.
