Many women are born with naturally large breasts that do not fit their body frame and diminish their quality of life. As these women age, their breasts may change in shape and size from holding so much excess weight over the years as time and gravity take over.
There are other cases where women may experience a dramatic change in their breasts from multiple pregnancies, losing a lot of weight or naturally changing shape as they age. Breasts can naturally droop, flatten or sag as we get older and the nipple may also drift lower towards the breast crease. In severe cases, the nipple may actually point downwards.
Both of these scenarios are remedied with two very common procedures, a breast reduction and a breast lift, to help improve the look of the breasts. It is often the case where a patient wants both a reduction and a lift for a combination of reasons. This is a viable option depending on an individual’s situation.
A breast list and a breast reduction are different procedures, however they can compliment each other.
- Breast lift – A breast lift is designed to lift the breast from a lowered position to a higher position on the chest. It is ideal for women whose breasts have begun to sag with age, after pregnancies, or after significant weight loss. It can give women a more youthful appearance. During a breast lift, Dr. Comizio focuses on lifting the breast to its original place and ensuring the nipple returns to its proper placement.
- Breast reduction – A breast reduction is often considered for woman who have excess breast tissue or large breasts that hinder their quality of life or do not fit their body frame. Breast tissue is comprised of fat and glands that make up the internal structure of the breast. Women that have too much breast tissue can suffer from back, neck, shoulder pain, and many other issues. Excess breast tissue and sagging can occur at any age. There are numerous young women who are in their teens and early twenties that benefit from breast reduction surgery.
Combining Two Procedures
Women who have large breasts and are interested in having breast reduction surgery can benefit from a combination of a breast lift and breast reduction. It is a fairly common procedure, and our patients have seen beautiful, life-changing results post-surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Comizio will remove excess breast tissue (the reduction), and any sagging skin and then reposition the breast higher on the chest wall (the lift). Having both procedures done at the same time can be more efficient for recovery and results. Rather than going through two separate procedures, with weeks of recovery for each one, there is only one surgery. It can also save costs for the procedure, anesthesia, hospital expenses, care expenses and time away from work and family.
Since a breast reduction is often a solution to reduce physical pain, health and medical insurance may cover both a reduction and lift if they are done at the same time. Of course, this is subject to specific insurance plans and coverage, however if it is covered, it’s a great way to achieve the final result you have imagined.
